Supplement of the Month: L. Reuteri

If your body was producing too much estrogen, say post hysterectomy, post menopause, or in males, just the natural decline with age, what could you ingest to counteract that? If you’re starting to experience osteopenia (bone loss) as you age and don’t want to risk indigestible calcium supplements that can show up as atherosclerotic buildup or kidney stones, how could you counter that? If you have lower gut issues such as colitis, how to protect the intestinal tract?

Limosilactobacillus reuteri, formerly known as Lactobacillus reuteri, may be a simple solution. It is found in sweet potatoes, or yams, artichokes, and beans but can be easily taken in some kefirs and some probiotic supplements.

“Lactobacillus reuteri (now renamed to Limosilactobacillus reuteri) is a species of bacteria that belongs to one of the major lactic-acid producing genera of bacteria. It can be found in the human intestinal tract, though not always and often in relatively low numbers. Lactobacillus reuteri is also found in the gut of other mammals and birds.

Initially, Lactobacillus reuteri was used to treat necrotizing colitis, a gastrointestinal disease characterized by infection and inflammation that is particularly dangerous for infants, particularly those born prematurely. Lactobacillus reuteri was used due to its anti-inflammatory effects. The research on Lactobacillus reuteri and necrotizing colitis used the Lactobacillus reuteri strains ATCC 55730 and its daughter strain DSM 17938, both of which can survive oral supplementation.

Interest in Lactobacillus reuteri grew after research confirmed that changing aspects of the digestive system can influence the immune system. A strain of Lactobacillus reuteri called ATCC PTA 6475 has been found to improve levels of testosterone and oxytocin, as well as skin quality in animal studies. Research on animals has also found potential benefits for hair quality, bone mass and preventing weight gain from obesity-causing diets.”

  1. I would like to share a recipe for homemade L. Reuteri Yogurt:

    Ingredients
1 qt Horizon grassfed ultra pasteurized organic whole milk
    1 cap Mercola Biothin
    1 cap Digestive Advantage
10 tabs BioGaia Gastrus (later use 2)
3 caps BioGaia Osfortis (later use 1)
    4 Tbs Now Inulin Powder

    Sterilize the following items
    • 4-quart saucepan
    • Stirring spoon
    • Thermometer
    • Small measuring cup
    • Hand mixer with 1 beater
    • 8 glass jars with lids
    • Measuring spoon (tablespoon)
    • Luvele jar and lid

    1. Heat milk in a saucepan on medium heat to 180°F for 20-30 minutes. Do not boil.
    2. Crush BioGaia Gastrus tablets in a bowl using a glass jar.
    3. Add one Biothin capsule.
    4. Add one Digestive Advantage capsule.
    5. Add BioGaia Osfortis.
    6. Cool the saucepan to < 85°F by placing it in a larger pan filled with ice water.
    7. Skim off the casein top layer with a fork and discard.
    8. Combine inulin powder with cooled milk until the powder has dissolved.
    9. Add probiotic powder from the bowl to the cooled milk and mix well.
Continue to add cooled milk to the powder mixture as necessary to dissolve all powder.

    10. Pour dissolved contents into the cooled saucepan. Mix well with hand mixer.
    11. Pour finished mixture into sterilized Luvele jar.
    12. Place the lid on the jar, and place the jar on the Luvele machine base.
    13. Add water to the machine base filling to the rear level line.
    14. Set the temperature on the Luvele to 98°F, and set the time to 30 hours.
    15. As the machine incubates, condensation will form on the machine cover. This is normal. Do not disturb the machine or the contents of the jar during this process.
    16. When the machine finishes, place the jar in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours.
    17. Set aside 1/3 cup of yogurt in a sterilized glass jar to be used as the starter for the next batch. When using the starter yogurt for the next batch, decrease BioGaia Gastrus tablets to 2 and BioGaia Osfortis capsules to 1 as stated in the ingredient list.
    18. Eat ½ cup of yogurt each day. Add sweetener or berries as desired.

    • This might best be published as a blog article. I’m sure others would have use for it. I already have an article on how good L. Reuteri is for us, so this wold complement it.
